Frequently Asked Questions
Tutoring
How do I book a tutor?
To get started, please contact us via our contact page. Our team will organise an intake interview to meet with you and your student and to complete registration. We work hard to ensure that our students are matched to tutors and will spend time getting to know your child’s individual needs before tutoring may begin.
How much does tutoring cost?
Fees are adjusted according to the qualifications and experience that each tutor offers.
You may request:
* an emerging tutor with less experience – from $55.00 per hour* (online tuition)
* an experienced tutor with additional training – from $70.00 per hour* (online tuition)
* a fully qualified teacher with classroom experience – from $85.00 per hour* (online tuition)
Most tutors are available to meet in your home or at a mutually agreeable location.
* unless otherwise stated, all prices on our website are exclusive of GST. An additional $12.50 in-person fee applies to each session that the tutor meets in your home or at a mutually agreeable location. (Fee dependent on location, greater distance of travel may incur higher fee.)
What about cancelling a session?
At the beginning of each term, you will confirm the number of sessions you wish to have in that term with your tutor. Should you cancel a session during the term, this may be rescheduled to a mutually convenient time – however, our tutors are very busy so if this is not an option, you will be charged for this session regardless of attendance.
Should the tutor be unable to deliver a session, you will receive a credit which will be applied to next term’s tutoring fees, or refunded to you should you cease tutoring.
It pays to be organised – check ahead for the term and anticipate school camps, sporting finals and eisteddfod performances, and account for these at the beginning of term, when you confirm your sessions with your tutor.
Extra sessions needed? No problem! Depending on their availability you may arrange more sessions in the term as needed with your tutor, and we will invoice for any surplus at the end of the term.
What age range do you tutor?
Tutoring services are provided for students aged from Prep to Year 12.
We do do have some university trained educators who may be able to assist with university subjects. Please contact us to discuss.
Where are the sessions held?
Sessions may be held at your residence, at a mutually agreed location (e.g. the local library or cafe), or online using digital platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet, or in our office at Ascend Learning, at the Hooper Centre. Part of the registration process is finding what works best for your schedule and your family’s requirements.
Can parents stay and watch a lesson?
While parents are welcome to stay during tutoring sessions, experience has shown tutoring may be more beneficial for students when parents were ‘in the background’ rather than sitting at the desk next to the student or tutor. We recommend a discussion with your tutor to work out what seems best for your child’s learning outcomes.
Our aim is for your student to build rapport with their tutor, which can be difficult for students to do when Mum or Dad is looking over their shoulder!
Do you support children with NDIS?
Ascend Learning is able to support young people who require additional support, however we are NOT registered for the NDIS, and are therefore unable to invoice plan managers directly. Please contact admin@ascendlearning.com.au should you have any further queries regarding the NDIS and tutoring services.
